Cape Clear
A stunning island permanently inhabited by about three hundred people, most of whom speak Gaelic as their first language. It is a place of immense historical resonance. One can see Megalithic and Bronze Age monuments; standing stones; sites associated with St. Ciarán, ( who is one of Irelands four pre-Patrician saints) and the O Driscoll's Dún an Óir (castle of gold) where they held out against the English after the Battle of Kinsale. Clear island is also a place of international importance for migrating birds and seabirds. Cape Clear Museum Books Highly recommended. http://www.birdwatchireland.ie/bwi/pages092003/wildlifecourses/capeclear.html
Cape Clear can be visited on a day trip via the Karycraft ferry which leaves Schull harbour each day throughout the summer months. http://www.capeclearferry.info/
